IX.br hits historic high with 31 Tbit/s of peak traffic exchange: a testament to decentralization and infrastructure growth in Brazil

The Brazil Internet Exchange (IX.br) has recently achieved a significant milestone. It has recorded an aggregate traffic exchange peak of 31 Tbit/s across its 36 locations, marking a historic high. IX.br São Paulo, which leads the pack, has also seen substantial growth, reaching an unprecedented 22 Tbit/s. When compared to the same period in 2022, these figures represent increases of 25% and 22%, respectively.

This growth can be attributed to several factors, one of which is the increased investment by video streaming companies, particularly those broadcasting football games. As live streaming of games via the Internet becomes more prevalent in the country, the number of accesses has increased.

Interestingly, while the IX.br São Paulo, that is a global leader in traffic exchange volume and number of participants, reached 22 Terabits per second, the reliance on it is decreasing. Previously, São Paulo accounted for 80% of Content and Application Providers (CAPs). Now, the proportion has reduced to 67%. This shift indicates a trend towards decentralization, with CAPs now connecting at other Traffic Exchange Points. This is a direct result of the IX.br team’s efforts to encourage the establishment of Content and Application Providers in locations other than São Paulo, such as Fortaleza, and the emergence of good data centers in different regions of Brazil.

In addition, IX.br Fortaleza and IX.br Rio de Janeiro have reached a traffic exchange mark of 4 Tbit/s, both entering the list of the world’s top 10 in peak traffic. IX.br Fortaleza, strategically located near the arrival point of submarine cables from the United States and Europe, has seen strong growth in the last two years, taking the second position in terms of peak traffic and number of participants among the Brazilian Internet Exchanges.

The robustness of IX.br is a testament to the model adopted in Brazil. The revenue generated from the registration of .br domains is invested back into improving infrastructure and strengthening the Internet in the country. This model, somewhat unique to Brazil, has provided sustainability for Traffic Exchange Points, setting a precedent that is not commonly seen in other countries.
